Modern Foreign Languages at Field End Junior School
Intent
Our aim is for all children to become mastery learners, confident orators, active learners and lifelong readers.
In Spanish this means that all children will have the opportunity to broaden their language skills. They will become confident orators and active learners as they master a new language. We believe that high-quality modern foreign language lessons will foster our children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The structure of the curriculum builds on prior skills and knowledge thus enabling each child to become a mastery learner. Providing children with the opportunity to read simple vocabulary and sentences in another language will broaden their experience of reading.
Learning to speak another language is an essential skill that enables our children to become increasingly knowledgeable global citizens and see the world beyond their classroom.
As Spanish is one of the most commonly spoken languages around the world, our curriculum supports the opportunities for children to find out about traditions and beliefs of another culture which supports an ethos of acceptance and respect for difference.
Implementation
At Field End Junior School, we use the Language Angles scheme of work. Spanish is taught across each year group so children have the opportunity to become proficient. Lessons are usually taught by cover supervisors.
The structure of the lessons are predominately oral so that all children have the opportunity to develop their spoken Spanish. Each lesson has a set theme and new vocabulary introduced within the lesson is revisited a number of times to ensure all children can understand and apply it in context. Within each lesson, there are also opportunities for children to practice speaking aloud. This will aid their confidence and accuracy in pronunciation.
Impact
Children can ask simples questions in Spanish. Children can speak in simple sentences and demonstrate a developing accuracy in spoken Spanish.
