Design & Technology at Field End Junior School

Intent

Our aim is for all children to become mastery learners, confident orators, active learners and lifelong readers.

Within our DT curriculum we aim to inspire pupils to be innovative, creative and active learners who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through ideation, creation, and evaluation. At Field End Junior School we want our pupils to develop the confidence to take risks, through drafting design concepts, modelling, and testing. Pupils will become confident orators as they reflect on and evaluate their work and the work of others.

We intend for all children to acquire appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum. It is our aim to create strong cross curricular links with other subjects, such as Mathematics, Science, Computing, and Art.

Through our scheme of work, children will become mastery learners through a sequential and progressive curriculum. We aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage pupils to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements.

Implementation

The teaching and implementation of the DT curriculum at Field End Junior School is based on the National Curriculum and supported by a creative and well-structured approach.

At Field End Junior School we utitlise the Kapow Primary scheme of work to support our teaching of Design and technology. We are dedicated to the teaching and delivery of a high-quality Design and Technology curriculum.

This is implemented through:

  • A well thought out, whole school, yearly overview of the DT curriculum which allows for progression across year groups in all areas of DT (textiles, mechanisms, structures, food and electrical systems).
  • Well planned and resourced projects providing children with a hands-on and enriching experience.
  • A range of skills being taught ensuring that children are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks undertaken.
  • Each project from Year 3 to Year 6 addressing the principles of designing, making, and evaluating and incorporating relevant technical knowledge and understanding in relevant contexts.
  • Clear and appropriate cross curricular links to underpin learning in multi areas across the curriculum giving the children opportunities to learn life skills and apply skills to ‘hands on’ situations in a purposeful context.
  • Independent learning: In design technology children may well be asked to solve problems and develop their learning independently. This allows the children to have ownership over their curriculum and lead their own learning in Design Technology.
  • Collaborative learning: In design and technology children may well be asked to work as part of a team learning to support and help one another towards a challenging, yet rewarding goal.

Impact

Pupils will have clear enjoyment and confidence in design and technology that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum.

Through carefully planned and implemented learning activities the pupils develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.

Pupils will build and apply a repertoire of skills, knowledge and understanding to produce high quality, innovative outcomes, including models, prototypes, CAD, and products to fulfil the needs of users, clients, and scenarios.

Pupils will be able to self-evaluate and reflect on learning at different stages and identify areas to improve.
